Political Hyperlinks Guide to International Resources on Israel and the Middle East
There is an inherent capacity when “surfin’ the ‘net” to risk “drowning,” becoming so totally immersed that one loses the anchorage of time. Thus, the challenge when organizing an array of hyperlinks is to provide structure that yields a flexible pathway which recognizes the attractions of digression. There is often overlap; for example, entities providing "blast" e-mails also serve as primary resources; also, within each subgroup, the individual listings are provided (thus far) in no particular order. [Please report any broken links to the webmaster.] Much of the information that has been interlaced herein is from the Tampa Bay Primer and MERIA's Fact-Checker. [Lest the compulsion to "reinvent the wheel" becomes self-intoxicating, note that (as of 2/25/2005) Shamash has accrued 3342 Hyperlinks!] For that reason, First are those that promise to provide concentrated resource material for issues of greatest initial concern to the Chavurah (including myriad hyperlinks); Second are those that are advisedly monitored daily, if possible (including the ability to subscribe to receive daily/weekly “blast” e-mails); Third are those that notably provide distilled Databases, opportunities for Activists and the Media (Primary and Watchdog). Fourth are those that may be reviewed less frequently. These include Israel (Government and Apolitical Organizations), Think-Tanks (American, International, Israeli, Middle East), a Fact-Checker, and Anti-Semites; The Israeli Institutions are divided into those that are more oriented towards Zionism vs. those that are more oriented towards the Peace-Process. [The hyperlinked-structures at the very bottom will ultimately be consolidated after greater facility with web-hosting has been achieved, to preserve certain graphic qualities thereof.] It has been suggested that “Zionism is a participatory sport, not a spectator sport” [by Steve Feldman, ZOA Executive Director and former political reporter for the Jewish Exponent]; thus, these opportunities are provided so as to maximize our individual knowledge-bases ... so that we can invoke the information optimally, as Israel continues to struggle to survive. Although some of the left-leaning sites are felt to exacerbate death & despair (while others feel pacifism is the major solution), none has been excluded (even one that is blatantly anti-Semitic). Essentially, the goal has been to be “fair and imbalanced,” favoring resources that are pro-Zionist (but not ignoring those that aren’t). [If a rationalization is needed to include the latter, recall quotations such as “Know thine enemy” and (from The Godfather) “Keep your friends close ... and your enemies closer!”] Only English-language sites have been chosen. This compilation appears overwhelming; there are ~424 (as of 3/3/2005) specific sites listed (not including the two groups of “unintegrated” resources at the bottom) and (some would suggest) a consultant is required to appreciate the subtleties of some sponsoring entities. Furthermore, each site is not only extensive, but also often carries its own hyperlinks (and biases). Such is the nature of the Internet. Therefore, the user is advised to enjoy whatever can be absorbed in whatever time-period he/she has available ... and revel in the fact that so many people and organizations are working to help Eretz Yisrael! {Additional Israel-related material may be found on the Fact-Checker and Non-Political pages, herein.} *** - ***
The Avalon Project and the Zionist Library contain the full text for most of the important Zionist writings. The Dinur Center for Research in Jewish History (of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem) provides extensive resources regarding both the history of Jewry and the history of Zionism. Jerusalem Archives seems to have all key-documents related to Jerusalem. Palestine Facts is dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate information regarding the historical, military, and political background to the on-going struggle between the State of Israel and the Palestinian Arabs. The American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise attempts to strengthen the U.S.-Israel relationship by emphasizing the fundamentals of the alliance — the values our nations share; for decades, it has maintained a fundamental document, Myths and Facts in the Middle East plus an extensive set of resources on an encyclopedic-volume of information (inclusive of that related to the Middle East and Israel). Law Library of Congress - Israel provides extensive legal references and hyperlinks. NewsMax, Kol-Israel, the Jewish World Review, World Net Daily, Israel Daily, Tzemach News Service, Maven, the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, and the Drudge Report provide organized hyperlinks to a variety of additional (categorized) sites of (inter)national newspapers and news-sources; MERIA provides a listing of News Sources and Journals, many of which overlap. Little Green Footballs does the same for Blogs. Jihad in America is a (5-minute) video depicting the domestic threat of Islamists (narrated by Steve Emerson). *** - ***
Daily Updates Daily Updates - Monitoring The U.S. State Department provides daily news briefings (both text and video/audio). The U.S. President provides daily news briefings (both text and video/audio). The UN provides a unique set of hyperlinks. ***
Daily Updates - Subscriptions The Daily Alerts generated by the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations is the manifestation of the voice of organized American Jewry, representing 52 national Jewish organizations from across the political and religious spectrum; it provides a forum for deliberations of American Jewish leadership and a central address for key American, Israeli and other world leaders to consult on issues of critical concern to the Jewish community. They are prepared by the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, an independent institute for policy research established in 1976, and are instantly available by-subscription [after clicking “Daily Alert” on the home-page, and then clicking “to subscribe” after having scrolled-down to the bottom of the most recent alert]. A (free) subscription is required to acquire “blast” e-mails from nine (inter)national “blogs”: Israel News.Net, Israel Resource News Agency (edited by David Bedein), Freemanlist, Facts & Logic About the Middle East, Gamla, the Schmooze-News, Israel Insider, Benador Associates, Guysen Israël News [vchemla@guysen.com], Jewish Comment, the Israel Herald, Think-Israel, the Sydney [Australia] Morning Herald, the Jewish World Review, [which also provides an extensive list of columnists], and the White House’s Office of Public Liaison - Jewish Leaders (written by Noam Neusner, the son of Midrashic Scholar ... Jacob). A (free) subscription is required to acquire “blast” e-mails from a local “blog”: the Yeshayah (Isaiah) 62:1 Israel News and Views weblog (edited by Stephen M. Asbel [which is issued almost-daily]. Other local friends compile information for secondary distribution: Lee Bender, Esquire, John R. Cohn, M.D., Roberta Dzubow, and Ernest M Kraus. Each has a particular focus. Stephen is comprehensive (often choosing the most disconcerting pieces available), Lee is resolute (and can also admix humor), John focuses on the media (including instant-letters for which he has received awards), Roberta forwards what she feels merits particular scrutiny (even if it has already been received), and Ernest doggedly conveys/critiques the motives (and hypocrisy) of the powerful. There is also a discussion-page (on AOL) sponsored by Israel News Online. ***
Weekly Updates - Subscriptions A (free) subscription is required to acquire “blast” e-mails from eight (inter)national “blogs”: Middle-East-Info.org, Jewsweek, MidEast Truth, Aish HaTorah (which also offers a Western Wall Cam), the Jewish Times, Bitter Lemons, GAMLA, and Virtual Jerusalem. A (free) subscription is required to acquire “blast” e-mails from a local “blog” which monitors the chronic, premeditated imprecision of the Philadelphia Inquirer (edited by Jerome Verlin): the Brith Sholom Media Watch. ***-***
Overview - Middle East History Many sites have overview-components, but these appear to be the most prominent, comprehensive and concise. Israel Science and Technology provides a basic education on the ancient/modern history of the Middle East. Israel's history (over the millennia)--employing maps--has been summarized by the Jewish Agency and by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Real Story of the Palestinians in Israel is a hard-hitting historical/pictorial. Small Mistake provides both background of Middle East history and hyperlinks to key-sites (such as to all the UN delegations). Israel 101: A Survival Kit for Dummies is somewhat whimsical in nature. Target America (PBS) details the lessons from America's first "war on terrorism" in the 1980s. Project One Soul depicts pictorially the impact of Islamic Terrorism. Zionism: The First One-Hundred Years is encompassed by many hyperlinks located near the bottom of the comprehensive list of hyperlinks generated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; they provide historical narrative, a timeline, and a reading list. ***

ADDITIONAL ACTIVIST OPPORTUNITIES exist: political and journalistic; also, economic efforts can be made, including countering a boycott of goods produced in the West Bank. ***

*** Media Watchdogs Palestinian Media Watch was established in 1996 to gain an understanding of Palestinian society through the monitoring of the Palestinian Arabic language media and schoolbooks. The Middle East Media Research Institute explores the Middle East through the region’s media. MEMRI bridges the language gap which exists between the West and the Middle East, providing timely translations of Arabic, Farsi, and Hebrew media, as well as original analysis of political, ideological, intellectual, social, cultural, and religious trends in the Middle East.
