MESA, ARIZONA (March 22) – Today, United Nurses of Arizona was elected to represent the Registered Nurses employed at Desert Samaritan Surgicenter. The "Authorization for Representation" election was conducted by the National Labor Relations Board; the union won by a two-to-one margin.

This is the first private sector NLRB-conducted election in which nurses have prevailed.

Kaye L. Tipton, National Coordinator for the Federation of Physicians and Dentists (of which the United Nurses is a division), credited the outstanding dedication, time, energy and commitment the nurses devoted to the campaign. "This assures nurses true collective bargaining rights in Arizona."

Jack Seddon, FPD Executive Director has nothing but praise for the unit’s spirit and perseverance.

Seddon and Tipton are committed to negotiating with the Surgicenter and reaching an amicable agreement that will recognize the needs of the nurses responsible for providing quality healthcare. They fully recognize the problems associated with managed care companies.

The FPD is an affiliate of the National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees which, in turn, is a member of the AFL-CIO through AFSCME, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
