Dear Ward Seven Voter:

I ask that you vote for me to be our Commissioner

The crass partisanship of the current Board—supported by the incumbent—must be changed if Abington Township is to prosper.  When I studied the budget, I showed why she was wrong to have increased taxes this past year.  There were uncollected property taxes ($330,000—Willow Grove Park), misspent monies ($340,000—pole lamps along the Fairway), flawed zoning policies leading to unneeded legal fees ($222,000—Congregation Kol Ami and Foxcroft Apartment House, to be built alongside the Acme Market), and increased debt-service ($400,000).  Many of these figures carry-over into the next year’s costs…and the incumbent defends them all as totally necessary.

These problems have been compounded recently, with the revelation that this year’s budget will be increased by another 5.9%, including $168,000 in new programs plus $7,700,000 million ($5.1 million more than anticipated) to buy the Hillside Cemetery tract; legal fees for this project have exceeded $250,000 and the Board will spend $30,000 more, for its condemnation.    [This information—and more—is printed in this week’s Times Chronicle.]  As a result, every household’s refuse fee will be increased by $31, to $200.  A certain austerity is missing from the approach pursued by the incumbent.  Analyses of these problems are on my web-site [http://www.doctor-bob.biz].

Unlike the incumbent, I want to promote honest, open government by hosting frequent, interactive communication with residents (town-meetings, newsletters) and win-win collaboration with Jenkintown; credibility is vital!  Unlike the incumbent, I would have demanded the Foxcroft owners upgrade the already-gridlocked Greenwood Avenue/Washington Lane intersection.

I am a fighter, and I “put my money where my mouth is.”  As President of the Pennsylvania Society of Internal Medicine, I initiated litigation against the consolidation of two gigantic insurers in 1996 (Pennsylvania Blue Shield and Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania), an effort which led to hearings in the Insurance Department and which, I hope, will restore competition.  Also,

I have fought legally to make Big Tobacco accountable for its sins.  And I sued to decrease the $410,000,000 subsidy provided by Philadelphia taxpayers for construction of the two new stadiums (Eagles/Phillies).

You deserve an honest, candid Commissioner.  You may recall that I lost the primary election by 37 votes.  You may also have read how I sued the local Republican organization for having conducted “Dirty Tricks.”  Judge Tom Branca ruled that it had violated his Order (stating there was no endorsed candidate) by having sponsored telephone calls placed during the weekend prior to the election, falsely stating that my opponent had been endorsed!  My opponent has paid for these calls, showing her complicity in this effort   to do everything possible to preserve this “closed shop” of Commissioners.

I have spent my career promoting Public Health, trying to cut taxes, and opposing favoritism.  I graduated from Cheltenham High School in 1969, received my B.S. Degree from Penn State University in 1972, received my M.D. Degree from Thomas Jefferson University in 1974, completed a 3-year Internal Medicine Residency at Henry Ford Hospital in 1977, and completed Fellowships in Medical Oncology (in 1979) and Hematology (in 1980) at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Hahnemann University.        In addition to leading PSIM, I have held numerous positions in professional medical societies, I was the Abington Police Surgeon, and I was President of the Lower-Northeast-Philadelphia Unit of the American Cancer Society (which gave me Volunteer Recognition Awards in Philadelphia & NY City).

Mailing of this letter was financed by the candidate; if you want to help me, my address is 1219 Fairacres Road, Rydal, Pennsylvania  19146-2911.  Submit a “write-in” vote; it’s EASY!  Cut Taxes; elect someone who listens!

Sincerely,
